Barry Sendel - Innovative Product Called Determine

Barry Sendel, in the mid-80s, purchased a German manufacturing company that produced an artificial monitoring device for breeding horses. The monitoring device offered the optimum time for artificial insemination for mares and/or fillys with the sperm from thoroughbred horses.

Witnessing the invaluable potential of the unique device, Barry decided to purchase the European manufacturing company which produced the device and develop the monitoring unit into a compact product designed for women to determine the optimum time of conception.

Determine was developed to predict the optimum time for conception
The innovative product called Determine was developed to predict the optimum time for conception as a response to the growing need for married couples who were planning families and who had spouses having difficulty in conceiving. During the 80’s, the need of this birth control invention was especially prevalent in North America where many women were finding trouble to become pregnant. Their fertile time was out of whack due to the pressures of life that gave rise to a needed product that could determine the optimum time of conception. The device is a monitor with a probe, this probe is made of high density, molded plastic with gold implanted on the tip of the probe along with chromium wrapped around the sides of the probe. By inserting the probe into the female’s vagina, up to the uterus, the monitor was able to determine the level of uteroglobin in the uterus, hence when the uteroglobin level was high the monitor needle would hit the green line indicating to the user that she had an eight hour window for conception.

Barry worked with reputable American Universities and conducted many impact studies to evaluate the Determine monitor and probe for acceptance by the FDA. During this time Barry’s company, Innovatech, decided to demonstrate howDetermine was to be used and therefore made a big splash at the Home Healthcare Show in Atlanta, Georgia.

Determine was being offered for a minimal price of $249 per unit and was a major hit at the Atlanta show where women were willing to pay much more to get their hands on the device. Determine was the main word throughout the entire show which had more than a quarter million visitors attend.

During the show in Atlanta a woman begged Barry so much for the product she was willing to pay a thousand dollars just to try it. However, Barry knowing he could not sell any unit without FDA’s certification. He was unable to sell her the monitor. However, Barry instead gave her a Determine on the basis if she got pregnant to let him know if it worked and if so to donate her offer of $1000 to a well-known charitable group. After a couple of months Barry received a letter from the lady to whom he gave the Determine to, saying she was happy with the device and is a future mom and she would follow Barry’s wishes by donating the thousand on behalf of Determine to a charitable organization.

The satisfaction in the endorsement was worth more to Barry than any advertising campaign could buy.

During Barry’s tenure, Determine sold over 2 million units until the company went public and Barry eventually sold his holdings in the said group and moved on to other interesting ventures.

More of Barry Sendel in the 1960s

Barry Sendel started Miron Cement in the late 1960s.
Barry Sendel started his building supply company located in Toronto. This was established in response to the rampant union strike on ready mix cement as well as to service the massive construction boom in the late 1960s.

The history of Miron Cement is deeply rooted to a combination of strikes and initiative.  The company dates back to the years 1968 and 1969.  Barry Sendel started his building supply company located in Toronto. This was established in response to the rampant union strike on ready mix cement as well as to service the massive construction boom in the late 1960s.
Ready mix trucks were deployed to cement batching plants to several sites such as Cadillac Developments Greenwin Developments, Olympia York Developments etc.  By providing ready mix trucks with cement, Barry helped preventing a major cash flow problem for the developers, because at the moment of the strike, the buildings were in between the stages of drawing their mortgage money.  The company had prevented a major cash flow problem for the developers and reprieved builders from strikes.

Barry Sendel re-introduced The Brook Life-Saving Airway Invention

Barry Sendel reintroduced Brook Life-Saving Airway (BLA)
In 1988 Barry Sendel re-introduced the Brook Life-Saving Airway (BLA), an invention for the medical industry and  was a medical device designed to eliminate cross contamination when giving “CPR”. During that time, herpes and aids virus was becoming an epidemic and therefore, in a life threatening situation, anyone giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation could be contaminated by the direct contact. Barry re-introduced the BLA device which quickly became world renowned with police, fire-fighters, EMS, hospitals, life-guards and even swimming pool owners.

BLA was a special design with a check valve that allows the person who is giving CPR to insert the BLA into the victim’s mouth illuminating direct contact. The person giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is able to blow air to the victim’s lungs while doing compressions on the victim’s chest. If the victim/patient vomits the BLA’s unique design allows the secretion to flow through a check valve illuminating the rescuer from any cross-contamination. BLA was light-weight, small to carry and disposable as it retailed for a price less than $15.00

Barry Sendel Helps the Fitness Industy

Barry Sendel finished a international marathon in Montreal, Canada
During the year of 1990 Barry Sendel had the privilege of helping an engineer in designing a unique fitness boot apparatus designed for skipping and jumping jack exercises. The boot an (ice-skate) design is mounted on two half-moon molded plastic made up of flexible polypropylene material. These two plastic half-moons are connected with a lightweight polypropylene material act as a spring between the two half-moon molded plastics.

This unique exerciser called “Experlopers”, with Sendel’s help, became a running shoe with a heat-sealed rubber molded to the bottom of the half-moon plastic preventing runners from slipping and wear and tear from running on pavement.

Barry Sendel also perfected the boot to a light weight polyethylene material to reduce the weight of the Experlopers. The Experlopers became well known to runners after Sendel finished a 26 mile and 385 yards international marathon in Montreal, Canada without any aches or pain in his back or knees. Most people do not realize, says Sendel, that when we run on concrete and/or asphalt your body weight becomes 10 times its weight on your spine and knees. The Experlopers prevents this type of pounding. Today the Experlopers are sold under the name of Kangaroo Shoes for fun and fitness.

Barry Sendel pioneered the concept of build it yourself
Barry Sendel pioneered the concept of “build it yourself” buying your own building materials and build your own deck, bathroom, kitchen, etc. After the great success of the expo of 67 selling “on-demand” building supplies to many contractors of the pavilions “let’s take that same concept and sell building supplies to everyone, let’s sell to consumers”. He was the first in North America to start a “Home Depot” concept. At Woodhaven Building Supplies and Home Improvement Inc there were four salesmen selling and educating the consumer the do it yourself concept at the same time.
Come in and buy your own building supplies! The Lowes and Home Centres that you see now, they didn’t exist at the time. Barry pioneered this business concept where all the box storebusinesses are. For Example, Home Depot was founded in 1974, Barry had developed this concept way before.

Barry Sendel Helped Habitat 67 Avoid Bankruptcy

At Expo 67, one of the World’s largest universal expositions was held in Montreal. One leading project was completed on time thanks to Barry Sendel. Barry’s constant brilliant thinking for problem solving was able to complete the Habitat 67 project (picture) on time.

This Middle Eastern-like-structure was behind many months from completion due to the manufacturing of the precast concrete pillboxes which took up to 24 hours to cure leaving insufficient time to complete the job on schedule. Sendel by way of developing a steam tarpaulin out of neoprene a synthetic rubber produced by the polymerization of chloroprene. It is highly resistant to oil, heat and oxidation enhanced brought the curing time by 18 hours to 8 hours.

These pillboxes were being manufactured at a pre-stressed concrete factory known as Francon a Montreal North facility. These pillboxes were taking 24 hours per unit to be made. Sendel’s tarpaulin enhanced the curing time from 24 hours to 8 hours, thus making the project on time for the opening of EXPO 67. The pillboxes were poured at the factory and transported by many trucks to the site and stacked one pillbox on to another by crane.

Barry was brilliant in developing this streamlined process helping Anglin Norcross the contractor meeting the timelines from completing Habitat 67 on time.
